Sherlock the Self-Appointed Sheriff
It was a Tuesday. The suspect: a French Bulldog, roughly nine pounds, guilty of nothing more than calmly chewing grass three houses down.
Sherlock saw him first. There was a beat of silence — the kind that, if you have a reactive dog, you learn to dread — and then the full siren went off. Lunging. Barking. The works. The French Bulldog did not look up. He kept chewing his grass, completely unbothered, like a man who has seen a lot of nonsense in his time and long ago stopped reacting to it.
I stood there holding the leash, whispering the usual apologies to nobody in particular, and thought: this dog genuinely believes he is doing his job right now. Not lashing out. Not scared, exactly. Patrolling. As far as Sherlock is concerned, he is the only thing standing between our street and total chaos, and every walk is a shift.
That's really where this bandana came from. Less "funny dog bandana" and more incident report.
We put a little sheriff's badge on it — mustard gold, the same shade as the "I BARKED" stamp — because if your dog is going to insist on serving and protecting the sidewalk from squirrels, joggers, and unbothered French Bulldogs, he might as well have the credentials for it. It says exactly what he's thinking, every single time: I came. I saw. I barked. No further comment. Case closed.
If your dog also considers themselves the unofficial law enforcement of your block, this one's for them. Sherlock would like it noted that he has not once caught a real criminal, but morale remains high.
