Sherlock's breeder was 16 hours away. Not a typo — 16 hours, the kind of distance where flying him back as cargo felt like a real option, right up until it didn't. So his breeder met us halfway: they drove 6 hours with him so we could fly out, rent a car, and drive the rest of the way back in a single day. Nobody involved in this plan had to be convinced twice. Everyone just agreed a tiny dog shouldn't spend his first day away from everyone he knew in a plane if there was any other way.

I thought I was ready. I'd read everything. I packed a stuffed toy with a little battery-powered heartbeat in it (Amazon), so he'd have something warm-feeling to sleep against in his crate for the drive — and he slept the whole way curled up against it. I also packed a flirt pole (Amazon), because he's a herding breed and I had this whole theory about keeping him engaged at rest stops.

The theory wasn't wrong. The math was. He was a few weeks old and about a third the size of the pole. He loved it anyway, propped up in the grass at a gas station somewhere, absolutely delighted, comically outmatched by his own toy.
